19 George F. White has well and truly flourished over the last 40 years. But what was it that influenced George to set up his own business, and how do we see it evolving over the next 40 years? George Francis White, a horse mad young boy living on a remote farm in Weardale with very focused ambitions to achieve his dream of becoming a jockey. At aged 16, he bought his first thoroughbred and spent all of his time breaking it in; with the influence of his father, the late Frank White, George achieved both O’ Levels and A’ Levels and went off to Cirencester to study to become a Chartered Surveyor. On the side, George worked as an agricultural auctioneer, a role he still very much enjoys today! George spent some time racing in point- to-points and working as a trainee land agent and assistant auctioneer. After a short period of time, George saw the opportunity to set up on his own on Bondgate Within in Alnwick; speaking about the move that changed his life, George said: “I merely set out, like many others, to bring in enough money for my family! I am extremely proud of how the business has grown over the past 40 years; I have to say, even 40 years later, the challenge of each new job excites me as well as the drive of trying to do the best for our clients, many of whom have become my friends.” Organic growth saw the firm open their second office in Wolsingham in 1981, followed by Bedale, Barnard Castle, Shiptonthorpe, Duns and Newcastle. “I try to be the first in the office every morning and last to leave in the evening, however, I am amazed at how enthusiastic the youth of our business is. They truly are the future and I am very proud to mentor them.” In the early days, George managed the business, however, in 1995 he appointed his first partner, Hugh Fell and then in 2015, the current managing partner, Robyn Peat. Robyn first joined the business in 1989, just ten years after it was founded. He grew through the business, working closely with George and playing an integral part in the evolution of offered services. Robyn set out to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors, leading to business to further growth. The business originally serviced mainly tenant farmers, however, clientele has rapidly diversified to landlords and commercial property owners, to those looking for advice on managing their revenue streams or renewable energy. As part of the firm’s success with a steady expansion into a more urbanised market, we opened a Newcastle city centre office in 2017 and are currently looking for premises in York. Of course, we couldn't celebrate our 40th birthday without mentioning and thanking the woman that has supported George from the very beginning. Anne White (George's 'rock'), as well as their children, Laura and Tom. It’s safe to say, it’s an exciting time for George F. White and we intend to spend the rest of 2019 sharing the celebration of our success and plans for the future with you all. ▪ 40 YEARS, THE GFW WAY From a one-man band back in 1979, to a business that employs over 100 people across six offices in the North...
